What Is Executive Function?
Executive functions are the thinking skills that handle planning, organizing, problem-solving and regulating behavior. They're the brain's management system, and they show up everywhere:
- Planning and prioritizing what comes first
- Organizing time, space and materials
- Getting started, and actually finishing
- Managing emotions and impulses
- Adjusting when plans change
When these skills are a struggle, everyday life feels harder than it should. The good news: they can be taught and practiced, at any age.
